My last sandwich I went for an early lunch at Terra Breads on 5th Avenue and Ontario Street, in the quiet industrial neighbourhood just behind Main and Broadway. Today was another grilled cheese sandwich.
Terra’s Grilled Four Cheese is classic and simple, served on sourdough with housemade ketchup and gherkin pickles. Unlike some others on the list, this sandwich was all about the cheese, consisting of the classics asiago, cheddar, havarti and mozzarella. Great to go halfsies with a girlfriend and another bread. Its worth noting that Terra Breads is a bakery and they also make a delicious tomato basil focaccia, as well as my favourite Blueberry White Chocolate dessert.

I spent my day off in West Vancouver this week. Savary Island is located just off the Lions Gate Bridge adjacent to Ambleside Park, making it a leisurely visit to the neighbourhood. The restaurant is a cute spot on the main road with big windows and wooden tables, always smelling like fresh pies. The menu is written up on a black chalk board, with a regular menu and a few daily specials. My companion ordered a nice egg omelet and Americano, while I ordered the Grilled Cheese off the regular and Van Mag’s menu. Served on fresh baked artisan bread and heavy with gourmet mozzerella, I was pleased with this grilled cheese and quiet satisfied with the size. For the sandwich, onions and tomatoes optional; $10.75 before tax.

Today I met with Friend at a small little cafe in the centre of downtown, Suzette’s Cafe located at the corner of Dunsmuir and Richards. Suzette’s is a little homestyle restaurant with lots of locals serving all day breakfast, sandwiches, and soup du jour. Our order was as simple as the process of walking in and ordering - two schnitzel sandwiches for two young ladies. I admit, I thought a schnitzel was a wiener-type. Actually, a schnitzel is a breaded fried cutlet often made of hammered pork. The name hails from Wien, Austria, hence the confusion of the Wiener-Schnitzel. Having known this, I might’ve not opted for this type of sandwich, with little else to it other than an option of simple vegetables and choice between three breads - nothing fancy. The schnitzel itself was fairly portioned, but for $6.50 you’re paying more for Suzette’s prime property downtown.
Suzette’s also serves up a decent looking all day breakfast, including the meat for $4, which I might be back for.

Immediately I was in love. This was not just simply because of my love for anything pork, but because this place can really keep the beauty of a good meat in tact without overwhelming it with sauce, which is often the case for BBQ Pulled Pork. Peckinpah is located in central Gastown, right behind Gassy Jack. Great for lunch dates (but probably not romantic dates given the messy nature of Carolina-style); I really love the wooden tables and big windows.
The sandwich itself is simple: Bioche + pulled pork + purple cabbage. Two optional sauces allow sandwich-eater to control how much sauce is to his/her liking. The sauces include a housemade chilly oil that doubles in cutting down on the fat, and a traditional tomato-based BBQ sauce. Nine-fifty gets you this and a side of your choice. I had a nice little potato salad. And a glass of water.

Pho Tan

If they admit to making a mistake this would be it.

It was like a cold chunk of mystery meat with lots of mayonaise and demi-baked white bread. Even for $3.75, I could totally hit up another Vietnamese sandwich shop for something a thousand times more satisfying.

The Dirty Apron

The list actually suggest the Roast Chicken, but visiting the Dirty Apron on a vegetatian Tuesday, my friends guilted me into ordering something more vegetarian-friendly. Instead, I had the herbed goat cheese with sun-dried tomatoes, some fennel and basil. I can tell you right away that I would definitely be back to try the daily specials, usually a homemade gourmet soup or something homestyle, and maybe some of the other select sandwiches. But this would definitely be a treat with prices about $10 before taxes. The herbed goat cheese sandwich itself was a bit over-powering on its own, but the quality of bread and other ingredients made me feel right at home (I love fresh and local).

Also a grocery store and cooking school!

This was no more a sandwich than Cujo was a puppy dog.

Last week, I ordered a sandwich innocently named “Home” and described simply as “duck breast, mango chutney, crisp onions.” At $16, it seemed at best an average deal, until it arrived: a loosely layered, chaotic masterpiece of toasted bread slathered with mango-studded chutney, slabs of duck and a little salad, all buried under a heap of wispy onion rings. This was no more a sandwich than Cujo was a puppy dog.

Burgoo

Expect a wait on a Sunday afternoon, even past 1PM (conveniently there are some nice coffee shops on the block to occupy your wait time, which may be an hour). Off the regular menu, I went straight for the Gooey Cheese Grillers. As comfort food, this is your grilled cheese sandwich, with class. A cheese connoisseur if I may, I appreciated the mozzarella, gruyere, emmenthal and cheddar melt upon baguette. Served alongside a large mixed green salad (pears, pecans and house vinegarette), this order is ideal to share ($12).

Friendly service and definitely a home-like comfort.
